Other Apple M2 chipset improvements are in its 16-core Neural Engine (15.8 trillion operations per second), Apple’s latest Secure Enclave (onboard device security for both hardware and software), a higher-bandwidth video decoder (supports 8K H.264, HEVC video, and ProRes), and a new image signal processor (ISP) for image noise reduction. M2’s 10 GPU cores (two more than M1) have 35% higher peak performance than M1, while at one-fifth of the power required from competing rival chips.

A closer look at Apple’s fine print revealed that it was compared against a Samsung Galaxy Book2 360 (NP730QED-KA1US) with Intel Core i7-1255U and 16GB of RAM.

Apple said it offers twice the performance at the same power usage level when compared to a rivalling 10-core PC laptop chip. The M2 chipset’s 8-core CPU has four high-performance and four high-efficiency CPU cores. This translates to an 18% faster CPU, 35% more powerful GPU, and 40% faster Neural Engine when compared to Apple’s base M1 chipset. It uses a second-gen 5nm manufacturing process, packing in 20 billion transistors (25% more than M1 chipset) and 100GB/s unified bandwidth (50% more than M1), with 24GB unified memory. The successor to the already powerful Apple M1 chipset series is Apple M2.

Effectively, the “world’s best selling laptop” just got an update, and it packs Apple’s most powerful chipset thus far, the Apple M2. Apple MacBook Air (2022) packs Apple M2 chipset in its fanless, MagSafe-friendly designĪpple introduced the MacBook Air (2022) at WWDC 2022.
